Description
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a Cabernet Franc-led red from Pessac-Léognan, grown on one of the few vineyards within the city of Bordeaux itself.
The estate takes its name from the Carmelite friars who owned it from 1584 until the French Revolution. Since 2010 it has belonged to Patrice Pichet, with Guillaume Pouthier directing the vineyard and winemaking, and a striking cellar designed by Philippe Starck and Luc Arsène-Henry. Planted on gravel, clay and limestone, the vineyard carries an unusually high share of Cabernet Franc for the Left Bank, backed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A good portion of the fruit is fermented as whole bunches, and the wine is matured in a mix of oak barrels, larger casks and amphorae. The result is known for its silky texture, perfume and fine-grained structure.
This is a wine to cellar. If opening it young, decant for two hours and serve at around 17 degrees with rib of beef, roast squab, venison or aged hard cheese. From a highly regarded vintage such as 2022, it should develop over twenty years or more.
