Château Lilian Ladouys, Saint-Estèphe, Cru Bourgeois 2020

Château Lilian Ladouys, Saint-Estèphe, Cru Bourgeois is a northern Médoc estate assembled from a patchwork of small parcels scattered across the commune.

The property takes its modern name from Lilian Rochet, who with her husband brought together a large number of tiny plots in the 1980s, and the vineyard is still spread in many pieces across Saint-Estèphe, several of them adjoining classified growths. Since 2008 it has belonged to Jacky Lorenzetti, who also owns Château Pédesclaux in Pauillac, and considerable investment has gone into both vineyard and cellars. Saint-Estèphe is the coolest and most clay-rich of the great Médoc communes, which suits Merlot better than the lighter gravel further south; the blend here carries an unusually high proportion of it alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

Serve with grilled red meat, duck or a cassoulet, and give young bottles an hour in a decanter.
