Description
Château Margaux, 1ème Cru is one of the four original first growths of the 1855 classification and the estate that lends its name to the appellation around it.
The château itself, a neoclassical villa completed in 1815 to a design by Louis Combes, is the most recognisable building in the Médoc, approached by an avenue of plane trees. The vineyard sits on pale gravel croupes that drain sharply and warm early, planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot filling out the blend, and a small parcel of Sauvignon Blanc kept for the estate's white wine. The Mentzelopoulos family has owned the property since 1977 and rebuilt its reputation, most visibly with a barrel cellar designed by Norman Foster that opened in 2015. Selection is strict, with a second wine, Pavillon Rouge, taking what does not make the grand vin.
Serve with roast lamb, beef or game and decant young bottles well ahead; the best vintages will develop for decades.
