Description
Château Mauvesin Barton, Moulis-en-Médoc is the Barton family's property in one of the two inland communal appellations of the Haut-Médoc.
The Barton family has been part of the Médoc since Hugh Barton bought Langoa in 1821 and a quarter of Léoville in 1826. Mauvesin, acquired in 2011, is their most recent addition and the one they have carried under their own name from the outset. Moulis lies west of the main run of gravel that borders the Gironde, on soils with more clay and limestone, and it holds no classified growths despite a long record of solid, well-made wine. The blend at Mauvesin leads with Merlot, which suits the cooler, heavier ground, and is completed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with maturation in French oak.
Serve a touch cool with roast poultry, grilled lamb, a beef casserole or a plate of charcuterie. It is ready to drink earlier than the family's Saint-Julien wines, though it will happily sit in the cellar for five or six years.
