Description
Château Melin is a Saint-Émilion built on Merlot, with a fifth of the blend given over to Cabernet Franc.
Saint-Émilion sits on the right bank of the Dordogne, a patchwork of limestone plateau, clay slopes and sandier ground running down towards the river, and its wines are led by Merlot in a way no Left Bank commune is. Merlot ripens early here and gives flesh, roundness and a supple tannin; Cabernet Franc, the traditional partner grape of the Libournais, contributes perfume, a finer-grained structure and a savoury edge that stops the wine becoming heavy. The blend runs to eighty per cent Merlot and twenty per cent Cabernet Franc, a common enough ratio across the appellation, and wines made to this recipe are generally raised in a combination of vat and oak barrel and drink earlier than their Médoc counterparts.
Round and medium-bodied, it suits roast pork, charcuterie and simply grilled meats; serve at around 17 degrees.
