Description
Château Meyney Rouge is a Saint-Estèphe estate on a bend of the Gironde, built on the site of a seventeenth-century monastery.
The buildings began as a religious house, the Couvent des Feuillants, and the cloister still stands beside the cellars, which makes Meyney one of the older continuously worked sites in the Médoc. The vineyard is a single block running down towards the river on gravel over a bed of blue clay, an unusual subsoil in the commune that holds water well through dry summers. Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the great Médoc communes and its wines have a reputation for firmness and staying power. The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a useful proportion of Petit Verdot, which ripens reliably on this riverside site, and the wine is aged in French oak.
It is at home with roast lamb, braised beef or game, and the better vintages will keep for well over a decade.
