Description
Château Monbousquet Grand Cru Classé is a Saint-Émilion property on the sandy gravel of the plain below the town.
Monbousquet sits away from the limestone plateau, on a mix of sand, gravel and clay on lower ground towards the Dordogne, and for a long time that address kept it out of the classification. Gérard Perse bought the estate in 1993, cut yields sharply and reworked both vineyard and cellar, and Monbousquet was subsequently elevated to Grand Cru Classé in the Saint-Émilion ranking, which is revised roughly every decade. Merlot leads the blend, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the wine is fermented in small lots and matured in French oak. Perse also owns Château Pavie on the plateau above, and the two properties are run by the same team.
Serve with roast beef, duck or a plate of hard cheese, and give young bottles an hour in a decanter beforehand. The better vintages will keep comfortably for a decade in a cool cellar.
