Description
Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the estate's classic Grenache-led red, drawn from the pebbled plateau that gives the property its name.
Mont-Redon farms close to a hundred hectares on the high plateau at the north western edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, one of the largest single holdings in the appellation, and has been in the hands of the Abeille and Fabre families since 1923. The ground there is armoured with galets roulés, the rounded quartzite pebbles the Rhône left behind, lying over red clay and sand; the stones hold the day's heat while the clay beneath keeps water within reach of the roots through a dry summer, and the exposed position takes the full force of the mistral. Grenache leads the blend, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault in support and small quantities of the appellation's rarer varieties. Fruit is hand harvested and sorted, fermented parcel by parcel, and raised in concrete vat and large old oak foudre rather than new barrique.
A mature release, savoury and settled rather than showy, at home with roast and braised lamb, game and hard mountain cheeses; decant briefly and serve at around 17 degrees.
