Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017

Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Grenache-led red from a large estate on the north western rim of the appellation.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies between Orange and Avignon and takes its name from the summer residence built there by the Avignon popes in the fourteenth century. Mont-Redon farms the plateau of the same name at the north western limit of the appellation, where a thick mantle of galets roulés over red clay stores the day's heat and gives it back overnight. The property runs to roughly a hundred hectares here, one of the largest single holdings in Châteauneuf, and it also owns land in Lirac. The red is built on Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault, vinified parcel by parcel and raised in concrete and large old foudres, a method that favours structure and length over immediate weight.

Balanced and savoury rather than showy, it belongs with slow cooked lamb, beef daube and aged cheeses; serve at around 17 degrees.
