Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023

Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Grenache-led red from one of the largest single estates in the appellation.

The Mont-Redon plateau sits at the north western edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a high, wind exposed terrace buried under galets roulés, the rounded quartzite pebbles the Rhône left behind over a bed of red clay. The estate covers close to a hundred hectares inside the appellation, farmed by the Abeille and Fabre families, who also hold vineyards in Lirac and the wider Côtes du Rhône. The red draws on most of the permitted varieties, with Grenache well in front and Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault filling out the frame. Fermentation is handled parcel by parcel and the wine is raised in a combination of concrete tank and large old oak foudre rather than new barrique, a choice that keeps the house style poised rather than heavy.

Firm but unforced, it suits roast lamb, daube and hard cheeses and will reward several years in bottle; serve at around 17 degrees.
