Description
Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Le Plateau is the estate's top red cuvée, a parcel selection from near century-old vines on the deepest galets of the Mont-Redon plateau, presented in a wooden box.
Le Plateau comes from the north western corner of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the covering of galets roulés runs more than two metres deep before it gives way to the soft sandstone the locals call safre, with thin clay bands that hold water and drain freely. The vines are close to a hundred years old. Grenache Noir leads the blend, with Syrah in clear support and a small portion of Mourvèdre. Fruit is picked by hand and sorted in the vineyard, then destemmed and optically sorted, given a short cold maceration and two to three weeks on skins with the cap punched down. Ageing is split, a little over half in Burgundian barrel, most of it new, the remainder in stainless steel, for eighteen months; the wine is then blended and rested a further year before bottling.
Powerful, firmly structured and built for the cellar, it suits roast and slow braised red meats, game and truffle dishes; decant well ahead and serve at around 17 degrees.
