Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 375ml 2019

Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge is a classically built southern Rhône red from one of the largest and longest established estates in the appellation, offered here in half bottle.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape lies between Orange and Avignon on the left bank of the Rhône, and Mont-Redon occupies one of its highest and stoniest plateaux, a cap of rounded galets roulés over red clay that gives the appellation much of its reputation. The estate runs to around a hundred hectares in a single block and has been in the hands of the Abeille and Fabre families since 1923, worked organically in recent years. Grenache leads the red blend, filled out by Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault with the appellation's minor varieties permitted alongside. Fruit is fermented parcel by parcel in concrete and stainless steel, then raised in a combination of large foudres and older barrels before assembly.

Firm and savoury rather than showy, it suits slow cooked lamb, daube and hard cheese; serve at around 17 degrees, decanted if young.
