Description
Chateau Mont-Redon Lirac is the estate's red from the right bank of the Rhone, a short distance west of its Chateauneuf-du-Pape home.
Lirac lies opposite Chateauneuf-du-Pape on the Gard side of the river, on terraces of galets roules, red clay and sandstone that are geologically close to those across the water. Chateau Mont-Redon, one of the oldest and largest properties in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, bought vineyards here in the 1980s and has bottled a Lirac ever since. Grenache carries the blend with Syrah and Mourvedre alongside it, hand harvested and fermented in tank. The wine spends time in large oak foudre rather than small new barrels, which softens the tannin without adding an oak character, and it is made in a rounder, more immediately drinkable style than the estate's Chateauneuf.
Approachable and rounded, it suits roast lamb, herbed pork and grilled vegetables; serve at around 16 to 17 degrees.
