Description

Chateau Musar Red is the flagship of Lebanon's best known winery, a blend grown in the Bekaa Valley and aged for years before release.

Gaston Hochar founded Musar in 1930 and built the cellars at Ghazir, in the hills north of Beirut; his son Serge, who took over in 1959, gave the wine its international reputation and kept production going through fifteen years of civil war. The vineyards sit on the Bekaa plateau at around a thousand metres, where limestone and gravel soils and cold nights slow ripening. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan are fermented separately, spend about a year in French oak, and are then blended, bottled and cellared at the winery. Nothing is rushed, and the wine is usually released around seven years after the harvest.

Decant an hour or so before serving at around 16 to 18 degrees, with slow-roasted lamb, game or spiced eastern Mediterranean dishes.
