Description
Château Palmer, 3ème Cru G.C.C, 1855 is the grand vin of a Margaux estate whose reputation has long outrun its official third-growth rank.
The château sits on the gravel croupes of Cantenac, within the Margaux appellation, and takes its name from Charles Palmer, a British major-general who bought the property in 1814. The distinctive turreted building came later, under the Pereire family. Palmer is unusual in the Médoc for the weight it gives Merlot, which sits alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot, and the estate has farmed biodynamically for over a decade, using cover crops, livestock and its own preparations. Fermentation is carried out parcel by parcel and the wine is matured in French oak, a portion of it new, in cellars beneath the château.
Best with roast lamb, game birds or aged beef; serve at 17 to 18°C, decant an hour or two ahead, and expect strong vintages to keep for two or three decades.
