Château Palmer 3ème Grand Cru Classé 2009

Château Palmer 3ème Grand Cru Classé from the celebrated 2009 vintage is a rich, powerful Margaux built for a long life in the cellar.

Although classed as a Third Growth in 1855, this Margaux property has long been spoken of in the same breath as the First Growths, thanks to a string of great vintages through the twentieth century. Its vineyards lie on deep gravel over clay around the villages of Cantenac and Issan, near the Gironde estuary. Merlot plays an unusually large role here, which gives the wine its famous plush texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon adds line and structure and Petit Verdot brings a peppery lift. 2009 was a warm, sunny year across Bordeaux, and it produced a deep crimson wine with blackberry, blackcurrant, liquorice and pepper, generous oak, and a combination of power and silkiness.

Give it time in the glass: two hours in a decanter helps this big vintage open up. Pour at 17 to 18 degrees alongside slow-roasted beef rib, duck breast with cherries or a mushroom and truffle risotto, and expect it to keep rewarding cellaring for many years.
