Château Palmer 3ème Grand Cru Classé 2012

Château Palmer 3ème Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Margaux, and the 2012 is a harmonious vintage that is approachable now.

The estate lies in the heart of the Margaux appellation, its gravel terraces running down towards the Gironde. Named after a British general who bought it in 1814, it was ranked a Third Growth in 1855 and has spent much of the past century performing well above that rank. The estate describes 2012 as three seasons in one: a rainy spring, a sunny summer and a wet autumn. That split produced exuberant, generous Merlot on one side and precise, linear Cabernet Sauvignon on the other, and the final blend, finished with a little Petit Verdot, marries the two into a wine of balance and harmony.

This is a vintage to enjoy while the bigger years rest in the cellar. Decant for about an hour and serve at 16 to 18 degrees with lamb cutlets, veal with morels or a simple steak frites. It will hold nicely over the next several years.
