Description
Château Palmer Alter Ego de Palmer, 2nd Vin is the second label of one of Margaux's most admired estates, conceived not as a lesser wine but as a different expression of the same vineyard.
Palmer stands on the gravel croupes of Cantenac in the Margaux appellation, classified a third growth in 1855 but long regarded as performing well above that rank. Alter Ego was created in 1998, replacing the estate's earlier second wine, and takes its name from the idea of an alternative self: the same terroir and the same team, but a selection and an élevage aimed at a more immediate style. Merlot plays a large part alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, reflecting Palmer's unusually high proportion of Merlot for the Médoc. The estate has farmed biodynamically for over a decade.
Good with roast lamb, beef or hard cheeses; serve at 17 to 18°C, and while it is approachable earlier than the grand vin it will hold comfortably for a decade or more.
