Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours Côtes de Blaye 2018

Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours Côtes de Blaye is a biodynamic, Merlot-led right-bank Bordeaux raised mostly in concrete.

The Blaye district sits on the right bank of the Gironde, north of Bourg and across the estuary from the Médoc, and its limestone and clay soils have long suited Merlot. Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours is one of the larger biodynamic estates in Bordeaux and has been in the Hubert family for generations. The blend here is 75 per cent Merlot, 15 per cent Cabernet Franc and 10 per cent Malbec, drawn from the property's limestone and clay soils overlooking the estuary. Fermentation ran on wild yeasts, and the wine was mostly aged in concrete, with 10 per cent fermented and aged in two to three-year-old oak, then bottled unfiltered. That restraint keeps the wine in classic territory: deep blackcurrant fruit shot through with lavender, meat juices, lanolin and graphite, with tannins that are present but already resolved enough to make the wine immediately drinkable.

Ready now and good for five to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with lamb chops, steak frites or a mushroom and lentil pie.
