Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours Côtes de Blaye 2019

Château Peybonhomme-Les-Tours Côtes de Blaye is a biodynamic Merlot-led Bordeaux from the limestone slopes above the Gironde estuary.

Blaye sits on the right bank of the Gironde, north of Bourg and across the water from the Médoc, and it is Merlot country: the clay and limestone soils suit the variety and the wines are built for drinking rather than decades of cellaring. Peybonhomme is one of the larger biodynamic estates in Bordeaux, and while the family has increasingly pushed into low-intervention cuvées, this is the classic estate blend, made up of 75 per cent Merlot, 15 per cent Cabernet Franc and 10 per cent Malbec. All the fruit comes from the property's limestone and clay parcels in the Premières Côtes de Blaye. Fermentation runs on wild yeast and the wine is aged mostly in concrete, with around a tenth fermented and raised in two to three-year-old oak. It is bottled without filtration.

Drinking well now and holding for six to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with lamb chops, a steak and chips or a wedge of hard cheese.
