Description

Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours L'Atypic is a biodynamic Blaye red whose Malbec-led blend falls outside the appellation rules, so it is bottled as Vin de France.

The Premières Côtes de Blaye sit on the right bank of the Gironde estuary, a district of clay and limestone that has long supplied honest, Merlot-based Bordeaux at sensible prices. Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours belongs to the Hubert family, who farm biodynamically across two Right Bank estates. As the name suggests, this cuvée is atypical: sixty per cent Malbec to forty per cent Cabernet Franc, a proportion the Blaye appellation does not permit, which is why it carries the Vin de France designation instead. The vines behind it are now around forty years old, planted on the estate's limestone and clay. Fermentation was with wild yeast and the wine was raised entirely in concrete, with no oak at all, before bottling without filtration.

An unforced, immediately drinkable Bordeaux that will hold for five years or so. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, duck confit or a plate of hard cheese.
