Description
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a second growth of Pauillac, and one of the Médoc estates most often spoken of in the same breath as the first growths.
The property was created when the large Pichon Longueville holding was divided among the family in the nineteenth century, the daughters' share becoming Comtesse de Lalande. Its vineyards lie at the southern end of Pauillac, bordering Château Latour, with a portion running across the boundary into Saint-Julien, which helps explain the wine's balance of Pauillac structure and a softer frame. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with a notably generous proportion of Merlot for the commune. The estate was run for decades by May-Éliane de Lencquesaing and has belonged to the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer since 2007.
Serve at 17 to 18°C with roast lamb, beef or game; decant an hour or two ahead, and expect fine vintages to age gracefully for twenty to thirty years.
