Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2020

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac's most admired estates, and its 2020 pairs full-bodied power with real elegance.

Its château faces Pichon Baron across the road, a reminder that the two were once a single property before an inheritance split them in two. Gravel soils over clay, close to the Gironde, give the wine its structure and perfume. Under the long stewardship of May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, from 1978 until 2007, Pichon Comtesse won a devoted following for its silky texture, and since then the Rouzaud family of Champagne Louis Roederer have invested heavily in the estate. Cabernet Sauvignon sits at the core, with Merlot adding flesh and Cabernet Franc a floral lift. From a warm, dry season, the 2020 offers ripe blackcurrant and blackberry, a savoury sweetness, great length and firm, fine tannins.

For drinking over the next few years a long decant is a must. Pour at 16 to 18 degrees with slow-cooked beef cheeks, lamb loin or a mushroom pithivier. Cellared well, it will keep improving for two decades.
