Château Poujeaux 2016

Château Poujeaux is the leading estate of Moulis, drawn from the deep gravel bank of Grand Poujeaux.

Moulis is the smallest of the Médoc communal appellations, set back from the estuary between Margaux and Saint-Julien, and its best vineyards lie on the deep gravel bank at Grand Poujeaux. Château Poujeaux holds a large block of that gravel and was long regarded as one of the two leading properties of the commune, ranked Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel before the classification was reformed; the Cuvelier family, owners of Clos Fourtet in Saint-Émilion, have since taken over the estate and invested steadily in vineyard and cellar. The blend takes in Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and the wine is matured in oak barrel.

Firm and classically Médocain, it wants rib of beef, roast lamb or game and benefits from decanting; serve at around 17 degrees.
