Description
Château Prieuré-Lichine, 4ème Cru is a Margaux fourth growth named after Alexis Lichine, the writer and merchant who did more than most to explain Bordeaux to the English-speaking world.
The property began as a priory attached to the Benedictine house at Cantenac, and the monks' vineyard is the origin of the estate. Lichine bought it in 1951, added his name to the label, and famously opened the gates to visitors at a time when Médoc châteaux simply did not receive the public. The vineyard is unusually fragmented, with parcels scattered across several of the communes that make up the Margaux appellation, giving the blend a broad base of gravel soils. Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured in French oak.
Serve at 17 to 18°C with lamb, beef or roast poultry, decanting an hour ahead; it drinks well in the medium term and will keep fifteen years in good vintages.
