Description

Château Raymond-Lafon, 1er G.C.C, 1855 is a Sauternes from a small estate on the high ground of the commune, with vines adjoining those of Château d'Yquem.

Sauternes depends on the cold waters of the Ciron meeting the warmer Garonne, drawing autumn mists over the vineyards and encouraging noble rot, which shrivels the berries and concentrates everything within them. Raymond-Lafon was bought in 1972 by Pierre Meslier, at the time the régisseur of Yquem, and his wife Francine, and the family has run it since to the same exacting standards: repeated passes through the vines to gather only botrytised berries, very small yields and long ageing in oak barrels. Sémillon makes up the great majority of the planting, with Sauvignon Blanc. The estate was not included in the 1855 classification of Sauternes and remains unclassified, which has never much troubled its standing.

Serve chilled at 8 to 10°C with foie gras, blue cheese or a fruit tart; well-kept bottles will improve for decades.
