Description
Château Saint-Georges is a Right Bank estate whose vineyard sits on the same limestone ridge as Saint-Émilion, just across the Barbanne valley from it.
Saint-Georges-Saint-Émilion covers barely two hundred hectares, making it the smallest of the four satellites, and its clay-limestone slopes are geologically continuous with the Saint-Émilion plateau. The château itself is one of the grandest buildings in the Libournais, raised in the 1770s by Victor Louis, the architect of the Bordeaux opera house, and it presides over an unusually large single block of vineyard running down the hill. The Desbois family farm it conservatively: hand picking, fermentation in vat, then maturation in oak barrel. Merlot takes the largest share of the plantings with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Malbec alongside it. Releases are deliberately delayed, with stock kept at the property until the wine has settled.
Savoury and medium-bodied with some bottle development, it suits roast beef, game birds and hard cheeses; serve at around 17 degrees.
