Description
Château Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge is a red from Pessac-Léognan, a Cru Classé de Graves on the gravel rises south of the city of Bordeaux.
The estate takes its name from Martin Smith, a Scottish merchant who owned it in the eighteenth century, and from the gravel mound, the lafitte, on which the vineyard sits. Daniel and Florence Cathiard bought the property in 1990 and rebuilt it thoroughly, adding a cooperage on site and converting the vineyard to organic farming. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the red blend, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot alongside. Picking is by hand, fermentation takes place in wooden vats, and the wine is matured in barrels, a good share of them made at the château itself.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at cool room temperature with roast lamb, beef or duck; the wine begins to drink well at about ten years and will hold in a good cellar for considerably longer.
