Description

Château Sociando-Mallet is an unclassified Haut-Médoc whose reputation rivals that of many classed growths.

Château Sociando-Mallet stands at Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, at the northern end of the Haut-Médoc, on a gravel croupe overlooking the Gironde that faces the same stretch of water as the great estates of Saint-Estèphe next door. Jean Gautreau bought the run-down property in 1969 and built its reputation without a classification of any kind, later withdrawing it from the Cru Bourgeois system altogether, and the estate has continued in the same hands since his death. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend with Merlot in support and a little Cabernet Franc. The wine is matured in a high proportion of new oak, in a firm, slow-maturing style that rewards long cellaring.

Tightly built and long-lived, it calls for decanting and for rib of beef, roast lamb or game; serve at around 17 degrees.
