Description
Château Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc is a red from Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, grown on a gravel ridge that looks straight over the Gironde estuary.
The property lies at the northern end of the Haut-Médoc, beyond Saint-Estèphe, on a bank of deep gravel with an open outlook over the river. Jean Gautreau bought it in 1969, when it was close to ruin, and spent the following decades restoring the vineyard and buildings. Sociando-Mallet is famously unclassified; Gautreau declined to put the wine forward for cru bourgeois status, arguing that its record spoke for itself, and it has long sold well above that category. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot make up the bulk of the blend, with a little Cabernet Franc, and the wine is matured in oak barrels.
Decant and serve at around 17 degrees with roast beef, lamb or hard cheeses; which comes round a little sooner than a full sized bottle and suits a table of two.
