Château Tronquoy-Lalande 2017

Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a Saint-Estèphe run by the owners of Château Montrose, and unusually for the left bank it is led by Merlot.

Château Tronquoy-Lalande lies north of the village of Saint-Estèphe on a rise of clay and limestone capped with gravel. The heavy clay holds water through dry summers and suits Merlot, which takes a larger share of the blend here than is usual in the Médoc, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and a notable proportion of Petit Verdot. Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owners of Château Montrose, acquired the property, and the two estates have since been run by the same team, with the vineyard progressively replanted and the cellar rebuilt. Fermentation is in temperature-controlled vats and the wine is aged in oak barrel with a moderate proportion of new wood.

Rich and firm in the Saint-Estèphe manner, it suits rib of beef, venison and slow-cooked lamb; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
