Château Tronquoy Lalande Saint-Estèphe 2012

Château Tronquoy Lalande is a Saint-Estèphe property whose vineyard adjoins Château Montrose, with which it shares both ownership and a winemaking team.

The northern Médoc commune of Saint-Estèphe is cooler and heavier in soil than Pauillac to its south, with clay under the gravel that retains moisture and lends the wines their density and grip. Tronquoy Lalande's vineyard lies in one block on a rise near the estuary, close enough to the water to moderate frost and extremes of heat. Under the Bouygues family, who also own Montrose, the vines have been progressively replanted and the winery rebuilt, and the fruit is picked by hand and vinified parcel by parcel. The blend leans on Merlot, which suits the cooler clay sections, with Cabernet Sauvignon for structure and a small amount of Petit Verdot for colour and spice, followed by ageing in oak barrel.

Structured and savoury with the density Saint-Estèphe is known for, it suits roast beef, game and mature cheese; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
