Château Tronquoy Lalande Saint-Estèphe 2015

Château Tronquoy Lalande is a Saint-Estèphe estate run by the owners of Château Montrose, on the same band of clay and gravel at the northern end of the Médoc.

Saint-Estèphe is the most northerly of the Médoc's great communes, where deep clay subsoils hold water through dry summers and give the wines their firm, structured character. Tronquoy Lalande sits on a gravel rise immediately behind Montrose, looking out over the Gironde, and belongs to the Bouygues family, managed by the same team that runs its more famous neighbour. That arrangement has brought a steady replanting of the vineyard and a rebuilt cellar, with picking by hand, sorting on tables and fermentation plot by plot in temperature-controlled vats. Merlot takes a larger share of the blend here than is usual in the commune, filled out by Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured in oak barrel with a measured proportion of new wood.

Firm but generous, it suits roast lamb, slow-cooked beef and aged hard cheeses; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
