Château Tronquoy-Lalande Saint-Estèphe 375ml 2012

Château Tronquoy-Lalande Saint-Estèphe is a Cru Bourgeois from the northern Médoc whose vineyard runs directly into that of Château Montrose, offered here in half bottle.

Saint-Estèphe is the coolest and most northerly of the Médoc's leading communes, with heavier clay beneath its gravel croupes than Pauillac to the south, holding water in dry years and giving the wines their firm, long lived character. Tronquoy-Lalande sits on a rise just south of the village, adjoining Montrose, and now belongs to the Bouygues family, owners of that second growth, whose investment in vineyard and cellar has reshaped the property. The blend leans more heavily on Merlot than is usual this far north, with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot alongside, and the wine is matured in oak barrel with a portion of new wood before bottling.

Solid and savoury, with the appellation's iron grip softened by bottle age, it suits rib of beef, game and mature cheese; decant and serve at 17 degrees.
