Description
Château Troplong Mondot Grand Cru Classé is a Saint-Émilion from the limestone plateau that rises behind the town, alongside Château Pavie.
The estate sits on the Mondot plateau, one of the highest points of the appellation at roughly ninety metres, on clay over asteriated limestone with a hard cap of rock that holds moisture through dry summers. It takes its name from Raymond Troplong, the nineteenth century jurist who owned it, and is ranked among the Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Émilion. Merlot dominates the plantings, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc alongside. The vineyard is farmed with growing attention to organic practice, the fruit is sorted by hand, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels.
Decant an hour ahead and serve at around 17 degrees with roast beef, lamb or game; it starts to drink well from about ten years and will keep for two decades and more in a cool cellar.
