Château Vieux Château Certan 2021

Château Vieux Château Certan is one of the historic properties of Pomerol, and the estate that first gave the appellation a reputation beyond its own district.

Vieux Château Certan sits on the Pomerol plateau, across the track from Pétrus, on clay and gravel over the iron rich subsoil that runs beneath the best of the appellation. It has belonged to the Thienpont family, Belgian wine merchants, since 1924, and members of that family have run it ever since. What sets the wine apart is the blend: where most of Pomerol is overwhelmingly Merlot, this estate carries an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc, with a little Cabernet Sauvignon alongside, a make up that owes something to the vineyard's history and gives a wine built for the long term.

Decant well ahead and serve at around 17 degrees, with beef, game or a mature hard cheese; it asks for at least ten years and rewards twenty.
