Description
Chionetti Barbera d'Alba DOC Vigna San Sebastiano is a single-vineyard Barbera from Piedmont, made by a family whose name has been bound up with the hills of Dogliani for generations.
Chionetti is based at Dogliani, in the southern Langhe below the Barolo communes, where the family built its reputation on Dolcetto at a time when the variety was treated as little more than an everyday drink. In recent years the estate has extended north into Barolo itself. Barbera d'Alba covers the variety as grown across the hills around Alba, traditionally on the sites where Nebbiolo would struggle to ripen and the grower needed something to sell in the meantime. Barbera carries high natural acidity with relatively little tannin, and it remains the most widely planted red grape in Piedmont. Alba lies at the centre of it all, the market town below the Barolo and Barbaresco hills, and Barbera was long what the growers there drank while their Nebbiolo slept in cask.
Serve at around sixteen degrees with tomato-based pasta, salumi or slow-braised meats.
