Description
Chionetti Langhe Riesling DOC is a dry Riesling from Piedmont, a grape few would think to look for in Barolo country.
The Langhe DOC is the broad appellation covering the hills around Alba and, unlike Barolo or Barbaresco, it admits varieties from outside the local canon, which has given growers room to experiment. A handful have planted Riesling on higher, cooler sites where Nebbiolo would ripen unevenly. Chionetti is based at Dogliani, in the southern Langhe, where the hills climb higher and stay cooler than the Barolo communes to the north; the family made its name there with Dolcetto across several generations. Riesling is a recent arrival in these hills and is made here in a dry style. White wine has always been the minority interest in these hills, which is part of what makes an experiment of this kind worth attention. The Langhe were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2014, recognition of a landscape shaped almost entirely by vines.
Serve well chilled with seafood, salads or a plate of prosciutto.
