Clos de l'Écotard Saumur Blanc 2020

Clos de l'Écotard Saumur Blanc comes from a single two-hectare clos planted at 8,000 vines per hectare with massale material from François Chidaine.

The Clos de l’Écotard lies on a slope below the village of Courchamps in Saumur, on clay and limestone with occasional outcrops of limestone bedrock. Michel Chevré planted it between 2009 and 2013 with the help of Thierry Germain, using a range of Chenin clones and sélections massales taken from Chidaine’s vineyards, at a density of 8,000 vines per hectare — considerably higher than the regional norm. The parcel is continuous, has only ever been ploughed, and has been farmed organically from day one; yields are held to four or five bunches per vine and picking is by hand, still rare in a region where machine harvesting is the rule. Fermentation begins in stainless steel and finishes in a mix of foudre and 500-litre demi-muid, after which the wine spends ten months on lees and is bottled unfiltered.

Drinking now and will hold for around eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled pork or a hard sheep’s cheese.
