Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2024

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is one of the few whites in the appellation made from equal parts of all six permitted white varieties.

Clos des Papes has been in Avril hands for more than a century and is run today by Vincent Avril, whose holding is unusual in being split across some two dozen small parcels spread right around the appellation rather than concentrated on one lieu-dit. That spread is what makes the white possible: the six permitted varieties, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Picpoul and Picardan, are planted and blended in equal measure, a formula the estate has kept to for decades while most neighbours lean on two or three. The wine sees no new oak and only a fraction of the estate's production is white.

Dry, weighty and famously long lived for a white Châteauneuf, it suits lobster, roast poultry, veal and mature hard cheese; serve at around 12 degrees.
