Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Clos des Papes is one of the benchmark reds of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, blended from parcels across the whole appellation and bottled here in magnum.

Clos des Papes has been in the hands of the Avril family for generations and is run today by Paul-Vincent Avril. Rather than a single vineyard, the wine is assembled from more than twenty parcels covering every soil type in the appellation, from galets terraces to sand and limestone, which is the estate's insurance against the swings of a southern Rhône vintage. Mourvèdre takes an unusually large share of the blend alongside Grenache, with Syrah and the remaining permitted varieties in support, and it is that Mourvèdre which gives the wine its savoury backbone and its capacity to age. Ageing is in large old foudre, with no new oak used at any point.

Full-bodied, savoury and long lived, it suits game, beef and slow braises and repays a decade in the cellar; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
