Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge 2021

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge is a Grenache and Mourvèdre blend from one of the appellation's benchmark estates.

The Avril family have made wine at Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the eighteenth century and have bottled under the Clos des Papes name since the 1890s; Paul-Vincent Avril is the latest generation to run it. The domaine holds around thirty two hectares split between more than twenty separate parcels scattered right across the appellation, and that dispersal is the point: the blend is assembled from galets terraces, sand and limestone rather than drawn from a single terroir. Grenache leads, but the proportion of Mourvèdre is unusually high by local standards, with Syrah and small amounts of the remaining permitted varieties completing it. The fruit is fully de-stemmed, fermented in concrete, and raised for about a year in old oak foudres with no new wood at all.

Full bodied, savoury and long, it goes with lamb, game and mushroom dishes and will improve for a decade or more; serve at around 17 degrees.
