Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Réserve 2021

Clos du Caillou La Reserve is the estate's old vine Chateauneuf-du-Pape, made only in the vintages that warrant it.

La Reserve is drawn from the oldest Grenache on the property at Courthezon, vines planted in the first half of the twentieth century on sandy soils over clay at the eastern edge of the appellation. Yields from vines of this age are tiny, and the estate declassifies the cuvee entirely in vintages it judges insufficient, so it is not made every year. Clos du Caillou is certified organic and picks by hand with sorting in the vineyard. The wine is fermented in concrete and raised in large older oak, again with no new barrique, the intention being to let the concentration of the old vines and the perfume of the sandy soils speak without any oak signature.

A wine of real depth that repays a decade in the cellar, it suits game, roast venison and truffle; serve at around 17 to 18 degrees.
