Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Clos du Caillou Les Quartz is the estate's stony, structured Châteauneuf-du-Pape, named for the quartz that covers its parcels, in magnum.

Les Quartz is named for the seams of quartz and the galets that blanket its vineyards on the eastern side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape at Courthézon, close to the estate's walled clos. Stones of that kind store heat through the day and drain hard, and the wine they produce is the most structured and the slowest to open of the domaine's regular cuvées, built on old-vine Grenache with a little Mourvèdre and Syrah in support. Clos du Caillou has farmed organically for many years and avoids new barriques altogether, ageing instead in concrete and large old foudre. The result keeps the estate's clarity of fruit while carrying markedly more tannin and depth than Les Safres.

Full-bodied and firm, it suits beef, game and slow braises and rewards several years in the cellar; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
