Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 2022

Clos du Caillou Les Quartz is a Chateauneuf-du-Pape from parcels laced with the quartz gravels that give the cuvee its name.

Quartz is unusual in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, appearing in seams on the eastern side of the appellation around Courthezon where Clos du Caillou farms. The stones hold and release heat and sit over sand and clay, and the parcels chosen for this cuvee carry some of the estate's oldest Grenache. The domaine is certified organic and works with low yields, hand harvesting and sorting in the vineyard. Grenache makes up the great majority of the blend with old vine Syrah completing it, and the wine is raised in a combination of large older oak and concrete rather than new barriques, so that the density of the fruit and the fine, mineral tannin of the site are not covered by wood.

Dense but polished, it needs a few years and then suits roast beef, venison and hard mountain cheeses; serve at around 17 degrees.
