Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Clos du Caillou Les Safres is the sandy-soil Grenache cuvée of a celebrated Courthézon estate, bottled in magnum.

Clos du Caillou lies at Courthézon on the eastern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an estate best known for the walled clos that was left outside the appellation boundary when the lines were drawn. Les Safres takes its name from its soil: the safres are the deep sands of this sector, and they give the lightest and most aromatic expression of Grenache in the commune, with silkier tannins and earlier drinkability than the galets terraces or the heavier clay. The vines are farmed organically, the cuvée is built on Grenache from those sandy parcels, and ageing takes place in concrete tank and large old wood so that no new oak crosses the fruit.

Medium-bodied, silky and perfumed, it drinks well young with roast poultry, lamb and herb-driven dishes; serve at about 16 degrees.
