Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône blanc Le Bouquet des Garrigues 2022

Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône blanc Le Bouquet des Garrigues is a white built around Clairette Rose, the pink skinned form of Clairette now rarely planted.

Clos du Caillou lies at Courthézon on the eastern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its walled clos was left out of the appellation when the boundaries were drawn in 1936, because the owner of the day, a keen hunter, refused the surveyors access to his game park. The vines inside that wall therefore sell as Côtes du Rhône despite sitting in Châteauneuf soil. The domaine is run by Sylvie Vacheron and is farmed organically. Le Bouquet des Garrigues is the domaine's multi variety white, led by 40 per cent Clairette Rose with 20 per cent Grenache Blanc, 10 per cent Bourboulenc and a balance of other permitted varieties. Clairette Rose is a curiosity of the southern Rhône, vinified as a white despite its coloured skin, and it gives texture and a low key aromatic character rather than obvious fruit.

Dry, textured and savoury rather than showy, it suits shellfish, herbed vegetable dishes and soft goat's cheese; serve at around 11 degrees.
