Clos Figueras Clos Figueras is the flagship red of a Gratallops estate that carried the Priorat revival into its second wave.

Priorat is a small, steep and remote appellation in Catalonia, where old Garnacha and Cariñena vines cling to terraces of llicorella, the dark slate that defines the region and forces vine roots deep in search of water. The area was close to abandoned by the middle of the twentieth century before a group of growers revived it in the late 1980s. Clos Figueras was established at Gratallops in the following decade by Christopher Cannan, a British wine merchant long involved in Spanish wine. The estate works old bush vine parcels on terraced slate, harvests by hand, ferments plot by plot and matures the top wine in French oak. Yields on these soils are naturally tiny.

Decant an hour ahead and serve at 16 to 18 degrees with grilled lamb, game or rich braises; it rewards a decade in the cellar.
