Clos Figueras Clos Figueres 2019

Clos Figueras Clos Figueres is the top bottling of the Gratallops estate of the same name, and one of the more classically framed reds of Priorat.

Priorat sits inland from Tarragona in Catalonia, a bowl of steep hills where vines grow on llicorella slate so poor and so free draining that yields fall to a fraction of what most regions manage. Only two Spanish appellations hold the top DOCa or DOQ classification, and Priorat is one of them, alongside Rioja. Clos Figueras was founded at Gratallops in the 1990s by the wine merchant Christopher Cannan, on old terraced parcels of Garnacha and Cariñena that had survived the region's long decline. Fruit is picked by hand, fermented parcel by parcel and matured in French oak barrels before a further period in bottle at the estate.

Give it air in a decanter and serve at 16 to 18 degrees alongside roast lamb, oxtail or aged hard cheese.
