Description
Clos Figueras Serras del Priorat is the estate's approachable introduction to the appellation, drawn from vineyards across the district.
Priorat is one of only two Spanish appellations to hold the top DOCa or DOQ classification, the other being Rioja. Its vineyards are planted on llicorella, a friable dark slate that holds almost no water and reflects heat back into the canopy, so vines root deeply and yields stay very low. Clos Figueras is based at Gratallops, near the centre of the region, and was founded in the 1990s by the wine merchant Christopher Cannan. Serras del Priorat is built mainly on Garnacha and Cariñena with a little Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in stainless steel and given a shorter and gentler passage through French oak than the estate's senior wines.
Serve at around 16 degrees with grilled lamb, sausages or a mushroom risotto; it needs far less cellaring than the estate's top bottlings.
